My Story, My Life
I am a father just like many, who loves his children a lot. I never wanted my children, to go through shame on account of me, which was the reason I hid my job status, from my children. One fine day my daughter happened to ask me, as to what is the type of job I am doing. In a very reluctant manner, I told her that I was a labourer. For them not to get any inclination, of what work I am doing, I would make sure to have a bath outside in a public toilet, just before I could enter my home.
My desire was to send my daughters to school and provide them with the proper education, so they could stand in front of people, with self-respect, pride and honor. I just didn’t want the world to look down upon them, the way I have been looked down upon by everyone, all these years. I have always been degraded and disgraced by these people. Therefore I made sure to save every little money that I earned, for my daughters education. I never did any unnecessary expenses, or even bought a shirt for myself, instead I used all that money to purchase their school books, so that their education doesn’t get hampered.
My only wish I had from my children was to study well and to earn back that respect for me. I was actually working as a Cleaner. Just a day before my daughters last date for her college admission, I was unable to make arrangement for the admission fees. On account of this, I was not in a state of mind to carry out my duty that day. Sitting beside all that rubbish I was supposed to clean, feeling low and hiding my tears from everybody, I just couldn’t work. All my co-workers saw me in that state, but none came forward to speak or even tried to console me. I was very disheartened and felt like a total failure. I just couldn’t understand how to face my daughter, who was sitting at home waiting for me to come with her admission fees. As I was born in poverty and being so poor, I Lost all hope and I came to believe, that nothing good could ever happen in favor of a poor person. The other name for poor is suffering. Then something unexpected happened;
That day after work, all the other cleaners, came upto me and sat beside me and asked, if I consider them as brothers, but before I could say a word, every single one of them handed me their one day earning, in my hand. As I was refusing them, they came up with the most unexpected thing, that touched my heart, they all said ” No matter what happens, even if we have to starve this day, somehow we need to make sure, our daughter goes to college “. On hearing these words, I just became speechless.
From that day I stopped taking a bath outside, trying to hide my true identity and instead, I went home as a cleaner. Very soon my daughter will be graduating from her University. All my three children have stopped me from working further. Today my daughter has a part time job and the rest of them do tuition. My daughter takes me to my working place quite often and along with my co-workers, who stood by me, we all get together and have a good feed. Together we have a good time and laugh and remember those old days, then they all ask my daughter as to why she always treats them and then my daughter replied and touched all their hearts, including mine by saying ” All of you sacrificed your one day earnings, to make sure I get to college, and all of you have been instrumental in making me become, what I am today. Please pray that I am able to give you all a treat every day ”
Today I no more feel that I am a poor man. I consider myself to be the richest man, for having such rich children and friends with me.
